About the opportunity

The University of Sydney’s School of Veterinary Science is welcoming applicants for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Aquatic Animal Health Diagnostics to work closely with Dr Francisca Samsing on an exciting project funded by the Fisheries Research Development Corporation (FRDC).

Global and domestic trends in aquatic animal production and trade indicate that Australia will increasingly require agile, strong, and modern diagnostic systems to effectively manage disease risks for aquatic species. This project will seek to forecast diagnostic needs and understand the changing demands for aquatic animal health diagnostic services in Australia. For example, activities such as the safe translocation of stock between states, the establishment of specific pathogen free (SPF) broodstock, point-of-care-testing, emerging production diseases and increasing requirements from trading partners, will require robust diagnostic technologies that are reliable, fit-for-purpose and accessible within the diagnostic network.

In this role, you will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of experts specialising in aquatic animal health diagnostics, encompassing industry veterinarians, specialised consultants and academic researchers.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • generate a map of the current operators and regulators of the diagnostic network for aquatic animal health in Australia

  • conduct a scoping study of existing, emerging and novel diagnostic technologies

  • lead and conduct a consultation process with stakeholders involved in aquatic animal health diagnostics in Australia

  • analyse and summarise data from the stakeholder consultation process

  • prepare and submit milestone reports for the FRDC.

About you

The University values courage and creativity; openness and engagement; inclusion and diversity; and respect and integrity. As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Aquatic Animal Health Diagnostics who has:

  • a PhD in a relevant field (e.g., Aquatic Animal Health, Aquaculture, Epidemiology)

  • familiarity with molecular diagnostic techniques, histopathology, or other relevant laboratory methods for disease detection in aquatic animals

  • strong capability to prepare comprehensive research reports and present findings to both scientific and non-scientific audiences

  • exceptional time management skills, with a consistent history of meeting project deadlines and delivering outputs on time

  • the ability to initiate, plan, and execute research projects with minimal supervision, demonstrating a high level of self-direction

  • a proven track record of publishing high-quality scientific research in peer-reviewed journals

  • experience in applying for research funding or grants with an understanding of the research proposal process is a plus
