We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate or a Research Fellow to join a growing research team led by A/Prof Michael Caruana. The preferred candidate will work within the MRFF-funded collaborative multi-centre Australian Cancer Risk Study led by Prof Anne Cust and A/Prof Julia Steinberg.

Using microsimulation models of prostate cancer and melanoma, you will generate evidence on how genomics-based risk prediction tools can be used to improve risk prediction and early detection for these cancers. This position will require experience in programming/coding to conduct quantitative work and coordinate with internal team members across the University of Sydney and Cancer Council NSW.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

For level A Postdoctoral Research Associate (Research Only)

• Work closely with the team leader and other chief investigators of the MRFF project

• To work independently and as part of the research team to undertake quantitative research, including modelling evaluations, analysis and manuscript writing

• Assist in coordinating the project investigator meetings, workshops and group meetings

• Assist in all activities related to the conduct of the research, including in the reviewing and updating of modelling analysis plans and related documents and in coordinating modelling exercises between various teams

• Assist in building and maintaining strategic relationships by liaising, consulting, and negotiating with internal stakeholders to identify critical issues as they relate to the research activities

For level B – Research Fellow (in addition to the above)

• Maintain a research profile, including preparation and writing of peer-reviewed journal articles, conference abstracts and reports, and presenting at conferences

• Provide informal mentoring/guidance to junior staff members and students as required

• Develop and maintain a robust network of academic, professional partners, and internal stakeholders

About you

Level A Postdoctoral Research Associate (Research Only)

• PhD in mathematics, data science or a related area with a substantial component of numerical analysis (e.g. physics, economics)

• experience in working with simulation models, preferably in a health or medical-related field

• substantial experience in statistical/quantitative analysis of research data, preferably in the health field

• programming experience in Python and/or R

• proven experience developing and contributing to research evidence by producing original, high quality and independent research

• demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across a range of independent teams

• basic experience in the development of academic publications or report writing

For level B – Research Fellow (in addition to the above)

• proven experience and research profile in a similar discipline or area of expertise

• previous experience conducting original research and extensive background in publication writing and report preparation.
