  • Employment Type: Full time (35 hours per week)
  • Duration: Continuing
  • Remuneration: Level 9 $138,171 - $146,613 (depending on experience) + 17% super + leave loading
  • Location: Kensington, NSW (Hybrid)

About UNSW Estate Management:

UNSW Estate Management provides a range of services to faculties, divisions and University leadership including campus master planning, infrastructure planning, development, construction, refurbishment, facilities management and security services. The Environmental Sustainability unit sets the strategic direction for environmental sustainability, working collaboratively with units across Estate Management and wider University to ensure that UNSW’s campuses and operations are planned and managed in a way that is environmentally sustainable.

Why Your Role Matters:      

The Manager, Sustainable Built Environment is a new role responsible for leading and delivering initiatives under the UNSW Environmental Sustainability Plan (ESP), with a focus on environmental sustainability in the built environment.

The role leads UNSW’s approach to embedding environmentally sustainable design (ESD) principles into all stages of design and construction projects, as well as topics relating to sustainability in the built environment such as nature, climate resilience and / or sustainable travel, and contributes to UNSW’s net zero goals.

The role of Manager, Sustainable Built Environment reports to the Head of Environmental Sustainability and has no direct reports, but may supervise casual staff, interns or consultants as required.

Accountabilities:

  • Provide expert design and construction ESD advice at all stages of fit-out, refurbishment, new building and external environment projects and influence and support project teams to achieve outstanding ESD outcomes, especially relating to embodied carbon and net zero.
  • Act as the subject matter lead and first point of contact for sustainability in design and construction, helping to raise awareness of ESD principles and championing their integration across the department.
  • Develop and lead sustainability initiatives, ensuring that project risks are managed and effectively consulting with key stakeholders. In addition to ESD, the role will lead on topics relating to sustainability in the built environment such as nature, climate resilience or sustainable travel.
  • Review and maintain UNSW design and construction standards and other documents and procedures as they relate to ESD to ensure that they reflect leading practice and UNSW priorities.
  • Develop and manage an overall program of work for sustainability in the built environment, setting priorities and developing supporting solutions, systems, policies and procedures.
  • Develop and recommend appropriate sustainability requirements / KPIs for incorporation into briefs, tenders and contracts (as they relate to sustainability in the built environment).
  • Contribute to the development of environmental sustainability policies, procedures, strategies and associated reporting for internal and external audiences.
  • Support environmental sustainability priorities relating to net zero, circular economy, nature positive and sustainable procurement, as well as broader sustainability priorities such as First Nations engagement and equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders across Estate Management, the wider University and external organisations in support of the University’s environmental sustainability objectives.

Who You Are:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in engineering, property, sustainability or related field (postgraduate qualifications in a sustainability or environmental engineering discipline would be highly regarded).
  • Extensive working experience in a sustainability-related role within the built environment / asset and facilities management / infrastructure sector, and a proven track record of influencing stakeholders to achieve sustainable outcomes.
  • Expert working knowledge of frameworks, standards, regulations and best practices relating to sustainability in the built environment and net zero, such as the Green Star suite of tools (Green Star Accredited Professional preferred).
  • An effective team player with excellent interpersonal skills including ability to build strong relationships and influence stakeholders, in particular project teams and senior management, to secure sustainable outcomes.
  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills including the ability to analyse complex issues, develop and implement effective solutions that deliver robust outcomes.
  • Ability to develop sustainability initiatives and strategies, prepare business cases, and translate strategies into effective action plans and measures for success with a significant degree of independence.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills.
