About the team

The UWA School of Molecular Sciences educates the leaders of tomorrow and generates translatable, practical solutions to significant global problems. Research and undergraduate and postgraduate education in the School span the fields of: human, microbial and plant biochemistry; chemical and molecular biology; systems biology; molecular genetics; ’omics technologies; synthetic biology; chemistry; materials; and nanotechnologies. The School has a strong PhD cohort supported by successful, externally funded research programmes.  Collaborations exist with national and international universities, industry, hospitals, and community stakeholders, generating high quality publications, patents, and spin-out companies.

The School currently has 26 academic staff, who together offer experience in teaching and research in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics and Chemistry. Teaching in the School is further supported by dedicated and experienced group of technical and administrative staff.

About the opportunity

Working in collaboration with an experienced team of colleagues, you will coordinate Masters specialisations within the School of Molecular Sciences, and teach into units across the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology discipline; an ability to contribute to teaching in the Genetics portfolio would also be considered.

You will be supported to develop your career through formal mentoring arrangements, peer observation of teaching, and professional development opportunities.

You will engage in the delivery of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology curriculum, and contribute to the development and implementation of strategies to improve the student experience, with a particular focus on the Masters program. You will also be supported to co-supervise research students in research laboratory settings and / or mentor students in team-based, industry-engaged research projects as appropriate to experience

About you 

You will be a pro-active educator, committed to teaching excellence and student well-being, and a collaborative minded colleague. You will have a strong focus on the student experience, through the provision of quality face-to-face and on-line delivery of teaching sessions, and effective coordination of teaching, learning and research activities of large student cohorts. 

To be considered for this opportunity, you will demonstrate:

  • PhD in an academic field relevant to the discipline or other higher professional qualifications appropriate to the discipline
  • Capability to deliver and coordinate effective teaching, including research-based training, to large student cohorts and develop assessment and other materials for units and courses, including on-line resources; demonstrated experience in program level coordination is desirable
  • Commitment to inclusive, student-centred teaching practices to extend equity of opportunity for all learners; experience in engagement with international student cohorts is desirable
  • Willingness and ability to engage in off-shore teaching
  • Ability to mentor post-graduate student demonstrators, and assist in the development of junior staff
  • Experience with, or willingness to, gain competency in learning management software and electronic learning environments
  • Experience in the delivery of classroom and laboratory-based teaching and assessment is highly desirable
  • Demonstrated/developing organisational, collaboration and leadership skills
