About the Role
A newly created position within the School of Mathematics and Statistics, in collaboration with the Melbourne Energy Institute, is now available for an outstanding academic with expertise in the development of mathematical and/or statistical methods of relevance to energy systems.

Your research expertise may include but is not limited to, optimisation or forecasting with a focus on contributing to Australia’s transition to a cleaner energy future.

You will contribute to the teaching and research excellence of the School, with publications in high quality journals and conferences, and capacity to mentor research students and secure independent grant funding to support a program of research. Active collaboration with others across the University of Melbourne is strongly encouraged, particularly via the Melbourne Energy Institute, as is collaboration with industry and government agencies. 


Your responsibilities will include: 


  • Conducting a program of research that contributes to the discipline of mathematics and/or statistics
  • Publishing research findings in international refereed journals and present results at seminars, conferences, and meetings
  • Teaching subjects to a standard that delivers a high-quality learning experience
  • Building and fostering partnerships with industry, government, collaborators at other Universities and other stakeholders
  • Actively supervising research students (undergraduate, graduate coursework and PhD students

Who We Are Looking For 
Our ideal candidate has an established track record of high-quality publications in leading international journal in the general areas of mathematical and/or statistical methods and applications, and demonstrated experience teaching at a university level. You will have excellent oral and written communication skills in English and the ability to build and maintain professional relationships with a range of diverse stakeholders.  

You will also have: 


  • A PhD in mathematics, statistics, or a related discipline 
  • A potential or demonstrated capacity to conduct research activities in collaboration with industry and/or government
  • Evidence of the ability to attract external research funding from national competitive research bodies and other sources, including industry
  • Evidence of the ability to teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in mathematics and/or statistics
  • A demonstrated capacity to supervise undergraduate and graduate research students
