Exciting opportunity to join the Integrated Sustainability Analysis Group in the School of Physics
Base Salary, Level B $118,390 p.a + 17% superannuation
About the opportunity
The School of Physics is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Integrated Sustainability Analysis (Education Focused). Integrated Sustainability Analysis is a research group within the School, and is internationally known for developing leading-edge research and applications for environmental and broader sustainability issues, by bringing together expertise in environmental science, economics, energy, social science, ecology, climate change, water and waste technology, agriculture, education, engineering, computing, mathematics, atmospheric science and ocean dynamics, nuclear physics and dosimetry, and material science.
The ISA group is led by Professor Manfred Lenzen. It is anticipated that the appointee will contribute to the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including especially its interdisciplinary units: Energy and the Environment (ENVI3114), Energy – Sources, Uses and Alternatives (ENVI5707), Industrial Ecology (PHYS4801) and Techniques for Sustainability Analysis (PHYS5032). We are seeking to recruit an early-to-mid-career academic to strengthen and complement existing strengths of the group.
Areas of expertise that would be desirable include:
Energy resources and use; electrical power generation including fossil fueled and alternate methods; environmental impacts of energy use and power generation including greenhouse gas emissions, transportation and pollution; embodied energy and net emissions analysis and, importantly, socio-economic and political issues related to energy provision. Energy carriers, global energy resources, the economics associated with energy conversion, the politics and culture surrounding energy conversion and use, and renewable energy technologies.
Principles and applications of Industrial Ecology, with a focus on understanding the complexity and interconnectedness between economic and environmental systems.
Quantitative analysis techniques including multiple regression, uncertainty analysis, integration, structural decomposition, and dynamic systems modelling, with a strong emphasis on demonstrating their usefulness for environmental and broader sustainability problem-solving.
Application areas of particular interest would include:
Renewable energy systems, energy management in buildings; solar thermal energy, photovoltaics, wind power and nuclear energy.
Waste generation, recycling and industrial symbiosis and urban sustainability.
Climate modelling, ecosystem trophic chain analysis, linking household consumption and environmental impact, identifying socio-demographic drivers of environmental change, and the uncovering the effect of land use patterns on threats to species.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
contribute to outstanding teaching and learning in the School of Physics, with a focus on interdisciplinary aspects
contribute to competitively funded programs of original ISA research, as part of the ISA team
contribute to engagement and service/administrative activities of the School of Physics and Faculty of Science
contribute to educational innovation, curriculum design and review, contribute to outstanding educational delivery and outcomes
