About UNSW IT and the role:

UNSW IT is part of the Operations Division at UNSW. The IT team at UNSW plays a critical role in enabling the University’s teaching, research, and industry engagement. Would you be keen to make a difference and work in higher education?

The Lead Solutions Architect will lead a team of architects that will design and communicate the solution architecture, across a business domain or sub-domain. The Lead Solution Architect will work with Enterprise Architecture to ensure all solutions meet current and future business needs, while complying to UNSW Enterprise Architecture. The role will also provide high level advice and recommendations, based on specialist expertise and experience, to address customer needs. This position will report into the relevant Head of Solutions.

Accountabilities

  • Understand business drivers and business capabilities (future and current state), and determine corresponding enterprise system designs and change requirements to deliver the goals of UNSW
  • Lead the design & architecture of end-to-end solutions across a domain of specific business applications or technologies based on our enterprise technology strategy and business requirements
  • Monitor the current-state solution portfolio to identify deficiencies through aging of the technologies used by the application, or misalignment with business requirements.
  • Ensure solutions architecture assurance and compliance with Enterprise Standards and target state across all team deliverables
  • Partner with Enterprise architecture to define, principles, guidelines, standards, roadmaps and initiate new strategic directions where necessary.
  • Lead and mentor a team of Solution Architects to develop a business outcome focussed architecture capability
  • Actively work with Enterprise Architecture and take a lead role in the Architecture Competency centre to build architecture practice.
  • Facilitate the evaluation and selection of software product standards and services, as well as the design of standard and custom software configurations.
  • Identify the organisational impact (for example, on skills, processes, structures or culture) and financial impact of the solutions architecture.
  • Work closely with the technology manager to ensure the execution of plans corresponds with what is being promised.
  • Partner with our internal infrastructure teams as well as vendors to define the requisite infrastructure environments and modify project where necessary.
  • Partner with our Engagement and Project Management teams to assist in developing business ideas, viability papers, market scans, industry scans and business cases.
  • Oversee and facilitate technical steering groups as part of formal or informal consultancy / project agreements.
  • Ensure hazards and risks are identified and controlled for tasks, projects and activities that pose a healthand safety risk within your area of responsibility.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

Skills and Experience

  • Relevant tertiary qualification as well as significant professional experience in software development including at least three years’ in a Solution Architecture role.
  • Well-developed solution architecture and design skills, with an understanding of Industry recognised architectural frameworks
  • An understanding of Cloud (SaaS, PaaS and IaaS), and on-site deployment and integration architectures (API, messaging, iPaaS)
  • Demonstrated application of solution architecture into Agile projects and modern practices such as DevOps.
  • Strong presentation skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to structure and articulate messages to different audiences at all levels.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, ensuring that the underlying problem is understood, and a robust approach / solution is developed.
  • Ability to understand the long-term ("big picture") and short-term perspectives of situations and to propose and estimate the financial impact of architecture alternatives
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with different levels in an organisation.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
