Salary Package: $74,062 - $79,823 p.a (HEW 4), (pro rata) plus 17% employer’s super and annual leave loading.
Appointment Type: Part time (17.5 hours/week) continuing position
Location: Macquarie University, Wallumattagal Campus (North Ryde)

THE ROLE

A fantastic opportunity for a suitably experienced science laboratory technician to provide technical and laboratory support for students and staff. Working closely with Lecturers, the successful candidate will prepare the laboratory equipment and materials for teaching staff and students’ use and assist in the demonstration of techniques and equipment. The role is also responsible for work health and safety (WHS) compliance and the creation of safe working practices within the laboratories.

The successful applicant must be available to work Monday to Friday, typically in the mornings (3.5 hours per day) in order to prepare the laboratories for scheduled afternoon classes. Days may vary to suit teaching schedules semester by semester, to a total of 17.5 hours per week.

About You

You will have a good understanding of Secondary school science requirements, focusing on Physics, Chemistry, Biology and EES (Earth and Environmental Science).

You should have an understanding of SDS (Safety Data Sheets) and safe chemical handling, practical experience with setting up and demonstrating experiments across the disciplines.

You will have great organisational, interpersonal skills, and time management skills, as the job includes: -

  • Back-office duties such as supply ordering through internal systems and waste disposal.

  • Coordinating with academics to ensure experiments are consistence with Secondary science curriculum (Stage 4-6).

  • Assisting with Secondary science teacher education program curriculum (Stage 4-6) led experiments.

  • Assist Primary STEM academics in setting up equipment and resources for tutorials.

  • Working in a collegial team environment.

  • Certificate or Diploma in a relevant area or equivalent relevant experience working in a university or school science laboratories, preferably working with chemicals

  • Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, workplace health and safety within a laboratory environment

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and document safe work practices.

  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office and internet, spreadsheets, databases and presentations

  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
