The Laboratory Manager is responsible for managing the operations of all laboratories within the School to ensure the effective and safe delivery of the School’s diverse teaching and research programs and to provide advice on occupational health and safety (OH&S) and regulatory matters. This includes managing a range of laboratories and facilities across Burwood and Waurn Ponds campuses.

The laboratories include teaching areas for anatomy, physiology, clinical exercise physiology, biomechanics, strength and conditioning, applied sports sciences, food sensory, food chemistry and nutrition, as well as research areas for a wide range of activities at varying physical containment (PC) levels (PC1 and PC2), and Office of Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR).

The position also maintains a poisons licence and provides high-level advice on all OH&S, biosecurity, and biosafety matters. This will also involve providing advice to the School Manager as required for structural, planning and compliance issues.

As a Laboratory Manager you will:

  • Develop and maintain safe systems of work via standard working procedures risk assessments across all teaching and research environments
  • Act as a coach and work with team members to deliver exceptional service to support teaching and research outcomes within the School.
  • Identify and lead laboratory improvement and design projects to enhance research and teaching outcomes.
  • Engage in process improvement activities and adopt new ideas to ensure efficient maintenance and performance of teaching and research facilities. 
  • Develop and manage an effective team to provide adequate support for teaching and research activities and to provide advice and training to staff and students regarding policies, practices and legislation requirements.
  • Ensure the safe and efficient operation of the School’s teaching and research laboratories, including managing laboratory access and online safety training delivery.

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Postgraduate qualifications or progress towards postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience; or
  • Extensive experience and management expertise; or
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of OH&S, biosecurity, and biosafety principles/policies.
  • Demonstrated experience at a senior level within relevant specialist laboratory environments with experience setting up and maintaining laboratories to Office of Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) PC2 level, and with clinical research environments.
  • Project management experience in areas such as laboratory development / refurbishment, large-scale maintenance works, or equipment purchases that require alterations to infrastructure.
  • Infrequent work outside business hours is required (e.g., work at evening or weekend events is required, on-call monitoring and response to laboratory remote alarm system) so a drivers licence is required.
