About This Opportunity 

The Kinnane Endowment Fund Internship has been created to provide relevant work and industry experience in a museum and university environment. The Kinnane Registration Intern will gain exposure to Art Collection Management, caring and handling of objects, and preparing artworks for exhibition. The Registration Intern will work under the mentorship of the Registrar (Loans & Acquisitions), Assistant Registrar (Collections & Storage) and Senior Registrar.

Under direction and supervision, the Kinnane Registration Intern will perform a range of duties and responsibilities that may include:

  • Inspect new acquisitions to compile data for the hard copy file in preparation for digital records in the Collection Management System (CMS), Emu.

  • Edit records in the CMS, including location changes and inserting data such as loan records, attaching research files, creating research groups and running reports.

  • Assist with the monthly pest management log and check the gallery and collection areas pest traps.

  • Assist with copyright approvals for works from the UQ Art Collection as well as other copyright requirements for the Art Museum’s digital and hardcopy publications.

  • Assist with handling, stocktake, quarantine check, basic cleaning, condition reporting, creating custom made housing and packing works of art for transport or storage.

  • Assist with the processing loans of artworks from the UQ Art Collection to other museums, for the On Campus Program at UQ and incoming loans from institutions and private collections to UQ Art Museum.

  • Assist with preparing artworks for display including framing, preventative conservation, installation and producing didactic labels.

  • Assist with access to the Collection, including locating works in storage for other UQ staff, public enquires and display of works in the Collection Study Room.

  • Undertake other duties as required.

This is a casual position for 2 days per week for approximately 40 weeks at Hew level 1, with an hourly rate in the range of $37.16 to $38.65, plus superannuation of 11%. As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases – at least once a year. This role offers flexible working arrangements and hours may vary from week to week.

About You  

  • Currently undertaking an Art History or Museum Studies degree at the University of Queensland.

  • Desire to work with museum collections.

  • Ability to accurately record data, assist with audit reporting and legal documents.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people by telephone, email and in person.

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to use computer applications in a networked environment, in a large- to medium-sized organisation, or the demonstrated ability to acquire such skills.

  • A passion for gaining knowledge and skills relevant to Art Museum practice; particularly in Registration and Collection Management.
