Industry Engagement Lead - AusSRC (Project Coordinator)

The Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy (CIRA) is a multi-disciplinary research institute engaged in a range of projects involving or motivated by radio astronomy. CIRA’s activities draw together academic research and professional staff from a variety of science, engineering, and computing disciplines to tackle unique and demanding challenges in radio astronomy. CIRA is the lead organisation and operator of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), half of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR), a member of the Australian SKA Regional Centre Joint Venture, and a key participant in the international SKA project.

SKAO
 
The SKA Observatory (SKAO)is an intergovernmental organisation tasked with building and operating the world’s largest radio telescopes. To fully exploit the scientific output of the immense amount of data flowing from the telescopes, the SKAO is working with science communities across the world through nationally-led science enabling infrastructure hubs, the SKA Regional Centres (SRCs).
The Australian SKA Regional Centre (AusSRC) is Australia’s portion of this international network and has been funded – by the Australian Government through the Department of Industry, Science, and Resources (DISR) – $63 million from FY 2022/23 to 2030/31, to establish and build capability to support the Australian and international SKA science communities, thereby ushering in the next era of astronomical discovery and advanced data processing. The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Curtin University, Pawsey Supercomputing Centre, and The University of Western Australia (UWA) are the four foundation partners formally collaborating to support and develop the Australian SKA Regional Centre (AusSRC) into a long-term national facility.

Working with science teams as well as local resource providers, the AusSRC will help to develop scalable post-processing and data analysis strategies and automated workflows that could eventually be applied to data from the SKA telescopes. Effort will also be directed to establishing and prototyping various aspects of the international SRC Network.

Your Role
 
The Industry and Engagement Liaison will be employed by Curtin University, line managed by the ICRAR-Curtin’s Director, Translation & Impact. Functional management of day-to-day activities of this role will be the responsibility of the AusSRC Business Manager.
As the appointee you will, under broad direction, take a lead role in driving AusSRC’s industry collaboration and general engagement initiatives. You will coordinate the establishment of new partnerships and collaborations with key stakeholders, including industry, applying your technical understanding of data processing and computing, as well as your commercial skills, to strike agreements that represent value for both industry and AusSRC alike.
You will proactively work with the AusSRC Management Team and the ICRAR-Curtin T&I Director to strategically plan, initiate and implement industry engagement projects and activities. This will include workshops and other events that translate and communicate the AusSRC’s science outcomes to industry, communities and multi-disciplinary sectors.
Internally, you will provide project support to the Curtin-node of the AusSRC in meeting its reporting requirements.
This role is envisaged to evolve in alignment with the AusSRC project as it develops and scales, and ultimately transitions from a planning and growth phase (focusing on building up the functionality required to handle the diverse science requirements of SKA telescopes), into an operational phase delivering data and enabling science for the astronomy community. As such, this role will especially suit someone looking to embark on this journey with AusSRC, who is willing to engage with professional development opportunities (if/when required) so they can adapt the focus of their activities according to changing project requirements.
This role is open to applicants with a background or understanding of computing or big data processing, commercial stakeholder engagement, business development, and event planning and delivery.
The role is also open to discussion on FTE commitment for candidates interested in part time and/or job sharing. There is the possibility of sharing responsibilities with ICRAR-Curtin’s T&I team.
Responsibilities:

• Identify, establish, and maintain strong professional networks and relationships with government agencies, industry groups, and internal and external key stakeholders that lead to new opportunities and strategic partnerships.
• Identify and develop collaborative opportunities for the AusSRC by developing links with industry.
• Collaborate with the AusSRC Science team in planning events and industry focused activities/projects.
• Liaise with key stakeholders to define, scope, and assess projects/opportunities and their feasibility.
• Manage and deliver projects with industry and other stakeholders, and monitor and report on outcomes in line with key performance indicators. Attend meetings and deliver on reporting requirements.
• Provide broad support to the technical experts at AusSRC on commercial dealings with industry and other external stakeholders.
• Monitor critical information and report on developments for the Business Manager’s/Director’s attention.
• Maintain and keep up to date shared repositories of information.
• Establish and maintain efficient processes and practices within the area and respond to ad hoc requests, as required.
• Coordinate arrangements for meetings, events, and activities.

• A background or interest in astronomy, science, and technology.
