About the position

In supporting the University to become a market leader, the Market Strategy and Insights team plays a key role in the development of customer growth and stakeholder engagement strategies.

The Director, Product will be responsible for leading innovative growth and product management and development strategies for the University’s portfolio. The role will drive the design and development of innovative solutions via product, market and growth strategy, product development and product management.

A little bit about you, as the successful incumbent, you will partner closely with a variety of stakeholders which will include the schools, Deans, Associate Deans as well as finance and data and analytics just to name a few. As a strong people leader, you are commercially savvy with a strong technical and statistics skill set who possesses the ability to influence at the senior executive level while showcasing a hands-on approach operationally bringing everyone along on the journey.

Some of your key duties will include:

  • Lead, direct and manage the product development function.
  • Create, deliver and articulate a product portfolio strategy and direction for the University’s product and pricing activities.
  • Develop, implement and manage a framework (including cost of acquisition/retention/profitability) for new product or opportunity development and existing reviews to ensure a consistent approach.
  • Keep up to date with market intelligence & customer insight to inform product development.
  • Identify new commercial product opportunities, initiate and manage the process of bringing new products to market and repositioning current products.
  • Using commercial understanding and control over costs to deliver product performance
  • Create, develop and execute sales, pricing, promotion and distribution roadmap across portfolio of products.
  • Deliver all products in line with brand values & quality aspirations of La Trobe University.

Skills and Experience

  • Ability to direct, lead and control the work of other managers. Extensive knowledge and skills and many years of relevant experience in the Australian University sector, or a breadth of professional experience in industry; would commonly have achieved second or further degree level qualifications.
  • Ability to demonstrate drive and integrity through a strong commitment to actions and taking responsibility for role modelling the professional behaviours important to the University.
  • Ability to support shared purpose, think strategically and harness information and opportunities to reinforce the vision for the future of the University.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage effectively and persuasively with senior colleagues through a superior ability to interact collegiately and negotiate effectively with a wide range of University stakeholders.
  • A proven track record of developing and implementing innovation strategies within a complex environment.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness and leadership in product development and management and through the management of high performing teams to achieve business objectives.
  • Evidence of strong commercial, financial and data analytics to demonstrate market or product opportunity development, leadership and management.
