About the opportunity
The Deputy Director (Research Development) of the University of Sydney Southeast Asia Centre (SSEAC) is responsible for supporting the SSEAC Director in enhancing the research culture and supporting high quality grant applications and research outputs relating to Southeast Asia. This role will also contribute to researcher development, and promote to the vision, governance, strategies and initiatives of SSEAC, in alignment with the whole-of- University vision and strategy. This is achieved through collaborative engagement across the University and across the Southeast Asian region.
SSEAC is currently one of six University-wide multidisciplinary initiatives (MDIs) within which the University concentrates intellectual resources from many disciplines to address the grand challenges facing society and to educate the next generation. SSEAC is a geographically-focused MDI, encompassing research engagement relating to the 11 diverse countries of Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Timor-Leste, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam).
About you (skills, capabilities and experience)
This is an academic Associate Professorial or Professorial (Level D/E) position requiring extensive research, research leadership and engagement experience in a relevant field. Experience undertaking research in Southeast Asia, or a comparable setting, is an important requirement. This position has accountability for supporting SSEAC’s research development strategy and operations and deputising for the SSEAC Director.
The successful candidate must have:
A PhD in an academic field relevant to the school and a national/international reputation in the field
In depth knowledge and understanding of the key strategic issues in a relevant academic field focused on the Asia-Pacific region, preferably including Southeast Asia
A wide network of established relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of SSEAC and the University
Demonstrate outstanding leadership skills with the ability to articulate a clear strong vision aligned with the University values and organisational goals to public and institutional audiences
Proven capacity to provide strong and effective leadership and demonstrable performance in management roles.
Strong track record in competitive grant awards and attracting external research funding
Track record of academic, community, industry or government engagement in Southeast Asia
Experience with interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary research
Term and remuneration
This is a part time position @ 0.4 FTE (2 days per week) for a term of 2 years. The successful candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
