This role is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining data solutions on UNSW’s data platform. The Data Engineer is responsible for building, implementing, and supporting data solutions and integration components using data technology components. This role combines expertise in data engineering, data modeling, and DevOps practices to ensure efficient data pipelines, reliable deployments, and optimal performance of data systems.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Lead the development, configuration and implementation of central data models, data persistence layers, data ingestion components, and components integrated into business applications
  • Enhance the UNSW IT standard integration platform based on the Microsoft technology stack through collaboration with wider colleagues (including but not limited to Architects, Engineers) and aligned with industry trends and best practice
  • Analyse specific requirements and architectures to design appropriate objects and methods for implementing functional and non-functional requirements
  • Guide developers and coordinate with internal organisational units and suppliers during implementation to ensure deliverables are met
  • Organise infrastructure or data/integration platform changes to integrate applications into the technology landscape
  • Design and implement relational database schemas, build data ingestion, transformation, and harmonization pipelines in the Microsoft Azure Platform, and develop SQL queries for data collection from relational databases and data sources
  • Proactively manage complex risks, issues, and financials and work with the team to find appropriate solutions
  • Support leadership in optimising the Application Integration & Data Services work, including practices, organisation, and resourcing for continuous improvement
  • Oversee effective communications with key stakeholders, internal and external, and provide influential input to achieve business outcomes
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct .
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others

Skills and Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in IT or a related discipline, with 5+ years of experience in software development using Cloud architectures and middleware components.
  • Experience with a diverse array of synchronous and asynchronous integration patterns (e.g., API, ESB, ETL) in appropriate settings.
  • Experience in data modelling, integration, and data design practice, including SQL queries and database schemas.
  • Proficiency in designing and implementing solutions using Azure data services (MS SQL, Synapse, Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Bricks, Azure Data Lake, Azure Storage Accounts, Azure Service Bus).
  • Experience with planning, designing, and deploying Azure IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS deployments, migrations, network, and security frameworks.
  • Extensive experience with the development of data solutions to support API integrations.
  • Strong understanding of application, data, and API security and privacy controls.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps and CI/CD tools for automated testing and deployment of data-related solutions and database schema changes.
  • Knowledge of system integration methods, products, tools, development life cycle, and their impact on integrated solutions.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills, ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with Agile Project Management methodologies and experience in participating in storyboarding, estimation, and using project management tools.
  • Knowledge of technical products like Terraform, Ansible, Docker, Kubernetes, Databricks, Artifactory, and productivity applications like Git, Jira, and Confluence.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
