About This Opportunity 

The Centre Manager is a senior management role that provides leadership to Centre administration staff and high-level planning, problem solving and decision-making support to the Director and Centre Executive Group. As a key point of contact, the position is required to maintain effective working relationships with Faculty and University staff of varying levels of seniority.

The Centre Manager is responsible for long-term operational planning, budget management, coordination and operational support services and management of core research facilities to achieve the Centre’s strategic and operational objectives.  The position is responsible for identifying growth opportunities and developing them into large strategic partnerships. The position also contributes to effective relationships with external organisations, including industry partners and UQ research partners.

Key responsibilities will include: 

  • As a member of the Centre Executive Committee, oversee all operational functions and support the Centre Director by ensuring organisational and financial effectiveness.

  • Provide advice to the Director and Executive Committee on the strategic management of the Centre, including the identification, development, and implementation of initiatives to promote its continuing development and growth. 

  • Proactively advise the Centre Director and staff on the identification, management and mitigation of risk.

  • Develop strategies for the enhancement of collaborative and new research ventures in conjunction with the Director, Executive Committee and Staff.

  • Within the matrix service delivery model, assist where needed in coordinating the professional services and physical resources of the Centre.

  • Oversee the preparation of the Centre annual budgets, quarterly forecast processes, and 3–5-year budget projections including providing advice and support to the Centre Director.

  • Advise the Centre Director and Executive on budget strategies, financial position and planning issues, working closely with the Faculty finance team.

  • Coordinate Centre Reviews in accordance with policies and requirements.

  • Ensure positive and effective associations with internal and external partners, clients, collaborators, alumni and colleagues of the Centre, Faculty and University.

  • Lead a high performing collaborative workplace culture which values contemporary leadership practices and encourages the development of future academic and professional leaders.

  • Direct, supervise and contribute to the effective and efficient management of the Centre research initiatives by liaising with the Faculty’s Research Partnerships Manager, Research and Innovation division and external funding organisations.

  • Establish and maintain effective and inclusive communication across the Centre and operate as a key interface with the wider University.

  • Direct the Centre’s Marketing and Communications strategy and oversee its implementation.

  • Oversee the planning and management of all Centre events including the Annual Showcase and Networking Event, industry workshops, awards ceremonies, team building events and conferences.

This is a full-time (100%), fixed-term position for up to 3 years.

At HEW level 9, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $127,496.67 - $134,829.23, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $149,171.11 - $157,750.20 annually. As these roles are covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases in line with the Enterprise Agreement.

About You  

Essential

  • A postgraduate degree and extensive experience in a research environment; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.

  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to and work within a complex organisational environment with multiple stakeholders from industry, professionals and the academic sector.

  • Demonstrated experience in preparing and managing budgets of up to $10 million and the ability to work well under pressure and constant concurrent deadlines.

  • Accomplished communication and interpersonal skills including a demonstrated ability to liaise and consult, prepare well written reports and submissions,
    negotiate complex issues, manage change, and communicate with diverse groups.

  • Demonstrated ability to work iteratively, adapting quickly to change and operating effectively both on an autonomous basis and as a member of a collaborative, client-focused team.

  • Ability to interpret and apply University-wide policies and procedures in an effective way at the organisational unit.

  • A demonstrated ability to lead a high-performing team of business and/or administrative professionals in role of similar size and scope.

Desirable

  • An established network within the water industry, national and international

  • Demonstrated experience with funding agreements and research contracts.

  • Demonstrated ability to interact and negotiate with senior industry management and government agencies.

  • Ability to understand the requirements of industry partners and the ways in which they operate.

In addition, the following mandatory requirements apply:
