About the position

The School of Nursing and Midwifery has a long and proud history as one of the oldest tertiary nursing schools in Australia. We offer education programs in nursing and midwifery that foster lifelong learning including undergraduate, postgraduate, research higher degrees and continuing professional development programs.

The School of Nursing and Midwifery has immersed its curricula and research within a range of clinical contexts. An essential element is the establishment of Clinical Schools based at Alfred Health, Austin Health, Northern Health and Melbourne Health networks. The Clinical Schools enable students direct access to expert clinicians and clinical services, provide a rich environment for clinically relevant research and practice change and facilitate opportunities for staff to engage with clinical practice.   The School has a long established national and international reputation in nursing and midwifery research and education, and the Clinical Schools provide opportunities for educational innovations, including simulation and clinician facilitated student supervision.

Reporting to the Associate Dean, as a Level D Academic you will have demonstrated expertise in contemporary nursing research, academic leadership and student/staff supervision.  The successful candidate will be expected to provide research leadership and make a significant contribution to the research reputation of the School/University, including research resulting in publications in high impact national and international journals and acquisition of competitive external research funding, as well as academic leadership and staff/student supervision.

Duties at this level will include:

  • Developing, teaching and coordinating subjects and courses that engage and motivate students whilst providing high quality learning experiences.
  • Leading development, design and review of curriculum and/or programs of study.
  • Encouraging intellectual development and career aspirations of students.
  • Leading scholarship of learning and teaching and disciplinary teaching pedagogy and research.
  • Conducting and leading outstanding innovative and high impact research with resulting publication.
  • Participating in discipline-based mentoring and coaching of junior colleagues to develop their teaching and research knowledge and performance.
  • Building partnerships with potential domestic and international partners.

Skills and knowledge required for this position:

  • Completion of a PhD or equivalent accreditation and standing recognised by the University/profession, as appropriate for the relevant discipline area.
  • Registered or eligible to register as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Demonstrated effectiveness and leadership in curriculum development and teaching with a proven commitment to excellence in teaching.
  • Evidence of effective contributions to leadership and management at department, school or university levels.
  • Strong record of publications, including in leading international journals and/or invited international presentations.
  • Proven leadership skills with demonstrated capacity to manage and mentor other teaching and research staff.
