About the opportunity

We are seeking to appoint a full-time, continuing level HEO 6 Assistant Laboratory Analyst based in the Analytical Laboratories of the Centre for Ore Deposit and Earth Sciences (CODES; https://www.utas.edu.au/codes) in the School of Natural Sciences (https://www.utas.edu.au/natural-sciences), which is part of the College of Sciences and Engineering.

CODES Analytical Laboratories currently employ five full-time and five part-time staff. The Laboratories operate four laser ablation-ICPMS units, a clean sample preparation laboratory and dedicated ICPMS unit for solution analyses, a fully equipped lapidary laboratory, WDS-XRF, portable XRF and bulk XRD instruments. The Laboratories play a dual role, being simultaneously a research unit within the Analytical Research Program of CODES, and a service unit, which supports the main CODES research projects through allowing CODES staff and students, CODES academic and industry partners and collaborators, and other external users, to perform geochemical analyses using the methods developed within the R&D program of the Laboratories. The LA-ICPMS equipment includes 4 RESOlution S-155 laser microprobes, two Agilent 8900, two Agilent 7900, and one Tofwerk icpTOF-R mass spectrometers.

What you’ll do:

  • Independently operate a laser ablation ICPMS daily following induction and training:
  • Set up instrumentation, program analytical spots on samples and standards according to needs of the job.
  • Perform first order instrument performance review before analytical session.
  • Perform quality control of analytical output.
  • Perform first order data reduction.
  • Perform some regular maintenance and minor repairs on the equipment under supervision of other staff members.
  • Independently use a scanning electron microscope at the University’s Central Science Laboratory to collect back scattered electron and cathodoluminescence images of minerals following induction and training.

­What we’re looking for:

  • An Honours degree or higher qualification in the fields of geology or geochemistry, with experience in the geochemical analysis of rocks and/or minerals
  • The ability to work safely in a laboratory setting.
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to use complex analytical equipment after training.
  • Experience with data reduction procedures for analytical data generated by LA-ICPMS
  • Demonstrated well-developed written and oral communication skills.

Other position requirements

  • Laboratory and workshop activities; handling hazardous substances.
  • Undertaking manual handling and lifting of >10kg analytical instrumentation.

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 6 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $110,273 comprising base salary within the range of $86,918 to $94,250 plus 17% superannuation.
