Offer Description
Many rare cell types are critically important in health and disease. For instance, resident stem cells aid in tissue healing and maintenance and circulating tumor cells are a hallmark of cancer progression. Despite the importance of these rare cell types, few platforms exist to assess their prevalence and functional heterogeneity. In this project, a PhD student will develop advanced cell culture substrates using digital light processing 3D printing that will isolate cells during prolonged culture, enabling identification and assessment of their prevalence in patient samples and the heterogeneity within the population. This project will generate deeper understanding of stem cell biology and result in the development of a valuable tool for the assessment of rare cells.
